MySpace Starts Playing to Strengths. Should Your Business Play in this Stream?

(Remember these days? MySpace is trying to come a long way…)
Amidst the rally around the US-Canada Olympic ice hockey game and the Google Buzz fallout, recent changes in MySpace cracked the front pages of Social Media news magazines.
2010 MySpace Changes
- According to Tech Crunch, old MySpace president Owen Van Natta is out and has been replaced. The troops have been rallied in a company-wide meeting and will be singing and dancing to a new company slogan, “Discover and be discovered.”
- MySpace has added a new feature to user’s pages: Stream (according to Tech Crunch). What Stream will provide users with is a list of the video, audio, and other content their friends are engaging. Facebook-ish, but if you’re looking for a song to put in your head, it’s easy to see what your friends are listening to.
- “MySpace News:” MySpace has been doing their best E! Entertainment impersonation by live streaming events. Their most recent event was for the Alice and Wonderland premiere.
Is MySpace Good for Business?
MySpace is putting forth quite the effort to re-establish themselves as a major player in New Media. They’re getting back to their core roots as being the place for the latest and newest audio and video content. These types of content usually catch the attention of younger audiences.
It will be tough to tell if MySpace will ever directly compete with Facebook again, but it still very much has its uses.
The question of whether or not MySpace would be good for your business depends, like most things, on your business.
Bar / restaurant owners, retail, and B2C that focus on younger audiences and fans of music and video would probably benefit from their time and effort on MySpace. Corporate contract lawyers would probably not benefit as much – then again it heartily depends on the types of contracts.
In the end, MySpace is definitely a place to continue to test and wade in the water. Social Search (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace…) continues gain ground on Search Engines for online user’s attention. If MySpace’s rebranding efforts end up having a positive effect, then having a strong presence in MySpace will serve to benefit you.
Because in the end, a rising tide raises all boats.
