Yesterday after the SMX West session “Ask The Search Engines” Matt Cutts, from GoogleGoogleGoogle, sat down with Web Pro News to do a live interview. He talked about Google Caffeine no-follow links, why page rank is not the most important thing, Google Buzz, and of course the NCAA brackets. Yet, the most exciting part of the interview was what he had to say about PuSH, also known as PubSubHubbub.

What is PuSH?

As Cutts explains it PuSH is “pushing content to people instead of people having to pull for it.”

Some sites such as FriendFeedFriendFeedFriendFeed have been using the technology for awhile now, but overall it has not been widely used. It came around about a year and a half ago and is not specific to Google or any of their products. The idea behind PuSH is to notify users as soon as something is available. Instead of waiting the five minutes to one hour for a feed of any sort to load, a ping will be sent out to notify feed readers that there is a new post available immediately.

Why Does This Matter To You?

WordPress WordPressWordPressannounced yesterday that the 10.5 million blogs hosted on their servers now have PuSH technology integrated into them. For their users who are hosting an install of WordPress, there is a plug-in available to use called PushPress.

“The ability for a search engine to subscribe to those feeds and get updates is hugely exciting,” says Cutts.

When you post a blog entry using your WordPress blog the post will be in the hands of your customers immediately. The type of content won’t matter, it could be anything from a post reviewing an event to a major announcement. Your subscribers will have the information within seconds.

Cutts went on to reference the earthquakes in both Haiti and Chile. The information was made public fairly quickly, as we move forward with PuSH technology the information will be in the public’s hands even faster. “It’s like kind of a dream of what you want. You don’t have to start crawling the web to find what you want,” he says.
