Twitter Lists – Golden Tech “How To” Series

At the end of September, Twitter announced that a new functionality called “lists” would be slowly rolled out to users. Some users picked up lists and ran with them right away, creating 10-15 lists per Twitter account. Other users weren’t so sure and left the featured alone. What is a Twitter List?
A Twitter list is a way to organize your Twitter users into a variety of categories. When you visit the list you will be able to see only the tweets of those on the list. Other Twitter users can subscribe to your list as well. Have you see our Northwest Indiana, Northwest Indiana Part 2, and Southwest Florida lists? These lists were created to allow other users to find people in their area. We will be adding more lists over the next few weeks, so don’t feel left out if you haven’t made it to a list yet.
Applications such as HootSuiteHootSuite
and TweetDeckTweetDeck allow lists to be showing as columns inside of the application so you can see the tweets on the list without visiting Twitter.
How Can I Benefit From a Twitter List?
Not only do Twitter Lists help you organize what you see on your screen, but they can attract others to visit your Twitter account. For example: if you were to visit any of our three lists we have shared you can “follow” them. Don’t worry, 500 new Twitter users will not show up in your regular updates. You will not necessarily be following the users, just the list. They will show up under your lists as @GoldenTech/northwest-indiana. When you click on the link, it will redirect you to our Twitter list page. By creating lists you are giving people an incentive to visit your Twitter page more often.
If you want to use a list for your purposes only, you can mark it as private. If the list is marked as private no one but you will be able to see the list.
How Can I See If I’m Listed?
On your Twitter profile there is a new section that has been added called “Listed”. If you click on this link it will display all of the public lists that you are currently listed in. This will not include any private lists you are in.
How Do I Set One Up?
To create a list:
- Login to Twitter
- Scroll down on the right hand side to “Lists”
- Click New List
- Fill in the information related to the list
- Click Save
To add members to the list:
- Click on your following list
- Find a person who belongs in your list
- Click the list icon next to their name
- Check the box next to the list they belong in
What Are My Limits?
Twitter lists are pretty flexible, but they do have their limitations.
- You cannot list yourself
- You cannot create a list within a list
- Only 500 people can be added to a single list
As you follow new people on Twitter you will have the ability to add them to a list as well. Keeping up with your lists will help benefit your Twitter followers and will continue to expand your reputation on Twitter.
